Hybrid Cars....? Companies are making hybrid cars so we can spend less money on gas and so we don't hurt the enviroment, right?. Well think about this, what's the point of paying 30 grand for a hybrid car when you can have the same car (not hybrid) for probably 10 grand less?. I mean, your still going to be wasting money because the money that you don't pay for the gas, you pay for the car. The only thing that hybrid cars don't do is hurt the environment, but as far as your money, you will spend the same amount of money or more yearly. Anyone agree?.

How do hybrid cars recharge the battery on highways? My understanding is that hybrid cars recharge their batteries while braking, but what happens if you drive a long time on the highway where there's relatively little braking? Does the battery die and you have to use the gas engine only until it recharges?

Advice on hybrid cars? We need a new car that gets superior gas mileage. I'm inclined to go hybrid, but my husband has several objections: 1. The hybrid cars have problems: they're harder to maintain and depreciate faster. 2. There are non-hybrid cars that get almost as good gas mileage as hybrid cars. Why are hybrid cars becoming a joke? I was looking at some hybrid cars sporting the newest technology and they are talking about cars that get 25-30 miles per gallon...as a fricken hybrid. Since when is that considered "fuel efficient" and why is the technology behind it producing cars that are as fuel efficient as cars 10-20 years old? Hell, I had a 97 Honda Civic that got an average of 30mpg even with tons of problems and 120,000 miles on it! Even the new Prius is down to 45-48mpg. What happened to the Prius that got 66mpg or the Insight that got 70mpg? Is it just me, or is automotive technology not only going backwards, but doing it with deceptive advertising and misleading wordplay? I hear what some of you are saying, but electric isn't the answer either. The bulk of electric power comes from burning natural resources (still) or producing highly toxic waste. So going electric will only replace one evil with another, less obvious evil.

My question is to all of you, while hybrid cars are a good starting point, are they a real solution? While they do recieve higher gas mileage, should we be looking away from gasoline entirely for a new solution to a mobile power source. The reason why I ask this is because I always hear what a great job we are doing by switching over, and yet our dependency on resources taken from hostile territories, is every day increasing. Speaking to a man who held a phd in Environmental impcat of Industry, I was given the impression that there is a 'hidden' impact of Hybrid cars that is overlooked. He suggested that some of the reduction in CO2 emissions from the car is ofset by the carbon dioxide produced when generating electricity in power stations. It made sense to me...is this fair, or should I really be looking into a Hybrid car to do my part?
