- It would be cheaper for you to just buy a diesel or a four cylinder economy car than spending the price difference on a hybrid. You'd have to drive the car for like 60K miles before you broke even on the amount of money you would have spent on gas. As far as reliability it depends on the car. Replacing the batteries is expensive though.
- The Prius is very reliable, gets a good gas mileage, and worth the extra $5,000 for the first couple of years, but after a while you may be lucky to even break even on repairs and gas. Around 5 Years After Purchase, the Batter will die. This is a repair that cost around $4000-$6000. Lights for the Cars can run for around $400. Body repairs are even worse. If you really want a hybrid, I would recommend leasing one due to repairs.
- I would say, if you are looking to save money and want to save on gas, get something with around 30+ mpg, like maby an 08' Malibu that gets 32mpg or a cobalt 36mpg for under 18k because if you spend 5k more on a car, you won't see any kind of savings untill you pay the car off, and I would not be cought in a prius, that is a goofy and nerdy looking car for 23-30k geez and you can't even find a cheap one out there, there are so many options out there look into what you really need and look at what youre really going to spend before you buy a car.
- Hybrids have proven to be very reliable. Not sure about the cost to fix it, but if you are in the hybrid market just for the money savings, then I wouldn't reccomend you buy one. Buy a smaller, compact car or a car that runs on diesel. Think about the new VW Clean Diesel- they are legal in all fifty states and will save you a TON of money without the noise and smell of a conventional diesel. Try a smaller, 4-cylinder engine so you won't use so much fuel. In other words, stray away from hybrids and look towards smaller engines and diesel. Hope this helps! -haynedoy
