What are the best options in used cars in India?
I want to spend about Rs.1.5L on buying a used car. The car should have AC and should have been manufactured after 2000. I am willing to buy any brand (other than Tata). What are my options? Any advice on the subject of used cars is welcome!! :-)

- A lot of Hyundai Santro Zip Drive(old shape, not the new shape Xing which was launched only in 2003) versions are available for the price you mentioned. Plus, there must be a lot of well-maintained Maruti Suzuki Zens available in the used car market. If you can spare about Rs.50,000 more, you could buy a 2002 Honda City(old shape) for around Rs. 2 Lacs. That is a very good car which has more power than the latest Honda City models. Or you could get a used 2001-2003 Mitsubishi Lancer for around Rs.160,000/-. My recommendation would be to stretch your budget a little and go for the 2002 Honda City. If you can't, get the 2001-2003 Lancer. Or get a 2002 or later model Wagon R. I dunno, I'm not really a M800 / Alto fan, I find them too cramped for my height. But if you don't have a problem, look around, you will be able to get 2005 and later model M800s and Altos to suit your budget. You could get a non AC 2006 Alto for that price, if you think you can fit an aftermarket AC - which doesn't cost much anyway. Stay away from cars that have met with accidents. You ll never know what trouble you re buying. Serious dents should tell whether it has met with a major accident or not. Look for tyre wear. If the tread is worn out, then you might have to replace the tyres. So keep all that in mind when bargaining over price. If possible, take it to a workshop and check for a worn-out clutch / if brake pads need replacing. Do not buy any car unless you have test-driven it for atleast 30 km one-way both in the city and on the highway. Only an extended test-drive will reveal if there is something missing, If the owner or car dealer refuses to let you take an extended test-drive with the car you re interested in, then rest assured that there is something wrong with the vehicle and he is trying to scam you. Simply walk away in such a scenario. After all its your hard-earned money, not his.
