Mair who was at the time the VP of GMs advanced engineering staff discussed with two engineers Joe Joseph and Tom Ankeny a revolutionary new small-car project code-named "Saturn". On November 3, 1983 GM Chairman Roger B. Smith and GM President F. James McDonald told the world about the Saturn idea. On September 15, 1984 the first Saturn prototype demonstration vehicle was completed. On January 7, 1985 Saturn coprporation was founded. In 1990 the first Saturns rolled off the line and 26 stores opened in the US.
