Buying an old motorbike without a V5 certificate?

I have seen an old motor bike for sale on ebay. The bike is a non runner and needs a complete restoration. The seller appears to be a car dealer and says that the bike has no V5 registration certificate. The seller appears genuine and has 99% feedback. The seller is willing to provide a receipt on payment. I can apparantly apply for a new V5 from the DVLA but what come back do I have if the bike is stolen or belongs to someone else?

  1. Not worth the gamble
  2. you need to get the vin number and check it or get the sellers guarantee. if you take the gamble, check the info out before you start restoring! good luck!
  3. I'm sure you can get a report on it from dvla first if you have the registration number. probably if you went to the dvla website you'll find out there....or if not there try the motorcycle news bike check service. that should help. at least you will know if its stolen or not.........if its not stolen, then obviously it does not belong to anyone else, i suppose. good luck
  4. If you were buying for money on a dealers premises then you could risk it as you would have the possibility of taking action if the deal goes sour. I wouldn't even think about doing this on Ebay unless you are prepared to lose the money and the bike if it's not kosher
  5. Hi no matter what the condition is of any vehicle the dealer should know that he should not be selling any vehicle without the registration document . Your local DVLA office will confirm this with just a phone call Buyer beware
