Why do people talk about hybrid cars like they are our salvation?

My question is: If everyone buys a hybrid car, what will we do with all the batteries in 10 years?

1. We own a hybrid. It gets great mileage, but I doubt anyone will challenge us to a drag race.
2. Batteries can be recycled.
3. Recycle them.
